Russians were warned about a jump in meat prices

Meat prices will rise in Russia before the holidays. The General Director of the National Union of Beef Producers, Roman Kostyuk, warned about this, writes Parliamentary Gazette.

He clarified that by the New Year holidays, beef prices in Russia will increase by at least 7-10%. This is a standard price increase on the eve of the holidays, Kostyuk noted.

He also added that beef production in the Russian Federation is the only industry that has not been able to close or seriously reduce the need for imports. Thus, Russia imports from 280,000 to 320,000 tons of imported beef per year. At the same time, domestic production accounts for only 18%.

Kostyuk noted that the rest of the meat that ends up on the shelves is waste from the dairy sector, which is aimed at reducing the number of animals and increasing productivity. He emphasized that beef has always been an expensive product due to difficulties in production. Also in Russia, the number of cattle is declining and small and medium-sized enterprises are “rapidly dying out.”

According to Rosstat, in September 2023, beef on the bone cost an average of 506 rubles. per kg, and boneless – 683 rubles, while a year ago the prices were 475 and 657 rubles. respectively.

The Ministry of Agriculture, however, reported in October that livestock farming is showing steady positive dynamics of development, and in January-August 2023, the production of cattle for slaughter increased by 7% to 701,100 tons, the Vedomosti newspaper writes.
