The situation when flowers from a bouquet begin to fade after a couple of days is familiar to many. Florist Elizaveta Makeeva shared her secrets to extend the life of cut plants.
“Today flowers are not a cheap pleasure. In addition, it is very disappointing if a beautiful bouquet loses its freshness the next day after purchase, and the flower heads begin to droop. In order to avoid such a development of events, it is necessary to create favorable conditions for flowers,” the specialist notes.
The first thing to do is take a clean vase and fill it with settled water. You can also use boiled water or tap water, adding a spoonful of weak vinegar (for example, apple cider vinegar) to “soften”. In order to provide flowers with nutrients and prevent the growth of bacteria, you should use special products sold in the same place where flowers are sold. If you haven’t thought about this need, you can prepare the appropriate additive yourself: add a teaspoon of sugar and half a tablet of aspirin to the water (instead of aspirin, you can also add a couple of drops of dishwashing detergent).
Flowers brought in from the cold should be allowed to rest for a while. Then you should remove the leaves from the lower third of the stems, and cut the stems at an angle of 45 degrees by 2 cm under running water.
“The water in the vase needs to be changed once a day. Moreover, the vase should be washed and possible plaque removed from the walls. When pouring new water, it is important to remember to apply fertilizing. The stems need to be trimmed again – by about 1 cm. The vase with flowers should be placed not in direct sunlight or near radiators, and also away from drafts. Another bad neighborhood is a vase of fruit located nearby: when they ripen, they emit ethylene, which accelerates the aging of flowers. If the air in the room is dry, it is useful to spray the bouquet with water. Wilted petals and leaves must be removed immediately,” said Elizaveta Makeeva.
Alstroemerias, eustomas, chrysanthemums, gerberas, orchids and carnations stand out best in a vase. But if you follow the rules of care, you can also admire roses for quite a long time.
