In Estonia, border guards began preparing checkpoints on the border with Russia for closure. Concrete blocks known as “dragon teeth” have begun to be installed at the border checkpoint in Narva, RBC reports.
The Ida Prefecture of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board announced yesterday that due to the worsening migration situation, the border crossing point in Narva may be closed. “We are closely monitoring what is happening at the border, because Russia is exerting migration pressure on Estonia and Finland, sending people to our border who do not have the right to enter the European Union. Since last week, several large groups have tried to enter Estonia,” the prefecture said.
The Police and Border Guard Board explained that border guards are preparing to use “dragon teeth” in two scenarios. One is “if the need arises”, the other is when the checkpoint is closed after February 1, when the checkpoint in Ivangorod on the Russian side will be closed for reconstruction.
The checkpoint in Narva is the most popular on the border of the two countries. There are five checkpoints in total between Russia and Estonia: the Luhamaa and Koidula checkpoints are intended for road traffic, and the other two checkpoints are for rail traffic.
