The United States and Germany intend to force Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to begin negotiations with Russia. As RBC reports, this was reported by Bild, citing sources in government circles.
US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz do not intend to directly convince the Ukrainian leader of the need for negotiations, the publication reports. Instead, both countries, as Ukraine’s largest arms suppliers, decided to take a different approach. Berlin and Washington plan to supply Kyiv with precisely those weapons and precisely in those quantities in which the Ukrainian army is capable of holding the current battle line, but is unable to recapture the territories annexed to Russia, the publication’s interlocutors said.
“Zelensky himself must come to the understanding that this cannot continue. Without any outside prompts. He must of his own free will turn to his people and explain that negotiations are necessary,” says one of the publication’s interlocutors in the German government.
The Russian Foreign Ministry named among the conditions for the start of negotiations Kiev’s cessation of hostilities and the receipt of weapons from the West; neutral status of Ukraine; recognition of “new territorial realities”; demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine; ensuring the rights of Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine and national minorities.
