The Sicilian diocese of the Roman Catholic Church had to apologize to the parishioners for the words of Bishop Antonio Stagliano, who publicly announced that Santa Claus does not exist, and his famous red suit with a cap was invented for advertising “Coca-Cola”, writes the newspaper La Reppublica.
“We didn’t want to disappoint young children, destroy their imaginations. Santa Claus is an example for children, he teaches them generosity and other virtues, ”the diocese said in a statement.
Parents of little Sicilians accused the bishop of violating family traditions and depriving children of the festive mood two weeks before the onset of Catholic Christmas.
Meanwhile, Stagliano himself explains that he just wanted to talk about the difference between the fabulous Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas, who, according to the Church, was a real historical figure. He emphasizes that today’s consumer culture, which demands to buy more and more, is different from the true meaning of Christmas, with its atmosphere of generosity and selfless help to the poor.
