Veterinarian warns about the consequences of obesity for domestic neutered cats

Obesity in domestic castrated cats can lead to many diseases, said veterinarian Olga Mikheeva.

According to her, cat owners may notice that it is difficult for an obese pet to breathe, but they do not know that excess weight can cause a number of diseases, writes the portal vetandlife.ru.

Among the consequences of obesity, the veterinarian named diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, heart and respiratory diseases, lipid metabolism disorders, pathologies of the musculoskeletal system and urinary and reproductive systems, and dermatological diseases.

The most common severe systemic problem in such patients is metabolic syndrome, the veterinarian added. This is a complex of symptoms that is based, firstly, on visceral obesity, when fat accumulates around the internal organs, and secondly, on insulin resistance, when cells stop responding to insulin. In this case, insulin cannot transport glucose inside the cells, and it accumulates in the blood. All this negatively affects carbohydrate, fat metabolism and the cardiovascular system.

To prevent your cat from gaining weight, you need to provide her with a balanced diet and control the size of her daily diet. It is also important to provide domestic cats with physical and cognitive exercise: games and climbing frames in the apartment, toys that require thinking, and so on. An active life will help your pet stay in shape.
