The European Union approved a draft document on long-term support for Ukraine, but was unable to agree on financial assistance. Bloomberg writes about this.
It is noted that a strategy has been agreed upon to provide Ukraine with long-term security commitments, which includes training the Ukrainian military and allocating funds for the development of the country’s defense industry, ensuring strengthening of Ukraine’s ability to counter cyber threats and disinformation, sharing intelligence and satellite imagery, and assisting with reforms related to Ukraine’s accession weight.
However, the EU’s original plan to spend 20 billion euros over four years on Ukraine’s military spending is under threat. According to media reports, this is due to contradictions among the member states of the union. Thus, the allocation of funds to support Ukraine on behalf of the European Union is blocked by Hungary, insisting that the EU first discuss a common strategy towards Ukraine. In addition, the terms of the plan do not suit Germany.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the European Union’s plan to allocate 20 billion euros in military assistance to Ukraine met with resistance; as a result, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, proposed allocating 5 billion euros in military assistance to Ukraine over four years.
