Allergist and immunologist Evgenia Parshina listed the main mistakes Russians make when bringing down elevated body temperature during a cold or ARVI.
The specialist, in an interview with Argumenty i Fakty, criticized such a popular method as wiping the body. She called it ineffective and dangerous. The fact is that you can make a solution from vinegar or vodka in the wrong ratio and cause burns to the skin or mucous membranes.
Moreover, Parshina urged not to lower the temperature if it rises slightly. “This is sometimes called “letting it burn out” so that the body can “burn out” the pathogen,” she explained, noting that the only exception is the situation in which a person feels unwell even at a temperature of 37.
The immunologist also demolished people’s attempts to sharply lower their temperature, for example, from 39 to 36.6 degrees with various antipyretics. The normal indicator of a decrease in temperature is a balance of one degree, the doctor said.
In addition, she warned against taking ibuprofen and paracetamol together for colds to enhance the effect. “In fact, by doing this they increase the risk of overdose, and also reduce the window of opportunity for themselves to replace one drug with another further,” Parshina concluded.
