The signs indicating the permitted speed limits on the road to the coast of Guayaquil have been changed due to the new parameters established by the authorities. Fines for non-compliance will apply from November 23, but the outreach campaign will continue until November 22.

The speed limit on the road towards the coast changes from 90 km to 70 km for light vehicles. The purpose is to reduce the rate of accidents that occur in this area.

No traffic sanction should be aimed at increasing revenue, but at protecting drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Therefore, it is positive that there is full knowledge about the causes of penalties and that the signaling is visible.

Along with the socialization that is proposed these days, it is necessary to think about campaigns on traffic regulations, road safety and risks at the national level.

Only in the area where the speed limit has been changed, between the Perimeter Road traffic divider and the Chongón toll, 14% and 24% of vehicles exceed the speed limit, according to the Guayaquil Municipal Transit Agency. This year, at least 73 accidents, 63 injuries and 15 deaths were recorded in this artery.

This year there have been complaints of poorly calibrated or damaged radars in various sectors of the country. In order for citizens’ trust not to be violated, and the measures to fulfill their function without accusations and suspicions, it is the government’s duty to ensure the correct articulation of the teams that provide services.

At the same time, drivers must be aware of the risks involved in violating traffic rules. and the economic impact that their violation will have.

At the end of the year, the beach season begins, and the already busy road towards the coast will increase the number of visitors, which is another reason for responsible driving. Life comes first. (OR)
