The ‘attack with long arms’ occurred against a Community Police Unit (UPC) in the La Guacharaca neighborhood, in the south of the provincial capital Esmeraldas.
One policeman died and another was injured after a “Attack with long weapons” registered on Sunday against a police facility located in the Ecuadorian province of Esmeraldas, in the northwest of the country and on the border with Colombia, which leaves nine people detained, the institution reported.
“The National Police of Ecuador condemns and rejects the attack with long weapons against police officers,” the entity published in a statement and reported that “unfortunately it leaves one police officer dead and another injured.”
The incident occurred against a Community Police Unit (UPC), located in the La Guacharaca neighborhood, south of the provincial capital Esmeraldas, the institution said without revealing more details about the event.
Esmeraldas is one of the nine Ecuadorian provinces in a state of exception, declared by President Guillermo Lasso since October 18 due to the increase in crime related to drug trafficking.
“The operational, investigation and intelligence units and their search and location protocols have been activated to find the whereabouts of the perpetrators,” the police version warned.

After the fact, the authorities carried out six raids and arrested nine people, “including (the) alleged perpetrator of death,” the police added without giving further details.
The Prosecutor’s Office announced on Twitter that “charges will be filed in the next few hours” against the nine “suspects in the attack.”
In addition, a submachine gun and a revolver were seized.
The Police showed images on their social networks in which shattered windows are observed in the access to the police headquarters as well as projectile holes in one of the service windows of the establishment.
In January 2018, in the province of Esmeraldas (San Lorenzo sector) there was an unusual car bomb attack that left a semi-destroyed police station and 23 people with minor injuries.
The person responsible was the dissident of the FARC, Walther Arizala, alias “Guacho”, killed by Colombian security forces in December of that year, who also kidnapped and assassinated a journalistic team of the newspaper El Comercio in April of the same 2018. (I )
