“Wars are wars, but the Olympics are on schedule”: the IOC refused to cancel the 2024 Games due to conflicts in the world

The Olympics in Paris will not be canceled due to military conflicts. This was stated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), reports the Inside the Games portal.

IOC head Thomas Bach stressed that the Summer Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 will take place despite military conflicts in the world, including the crisis in Ukraine and aggravation in the Middle East. “We have very strong geopolitical tensions. To say that we will sacrifice the Games would be a completely wrong approach,” Bach said.

He added that in the past, athletes, despite political conflicts in their countries, still took part in the games. The IOC continues to fulfill its humanitarian mission, uniting athletes from all countries with competitions, although now, according to the UN, there are 28 wars going on in the world, the head of the IOC emphasized.

Let us note that earlier, after the start of the SVO in Ukraine, Russians and Belarusians were suspended from international competitions. At the same time, representatives of Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states demanded that they be completely banned from participating in competitions in Olympic sports. However, the IOC recently decided to admit Russian athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris as a “refugee team” – in a neutral status and under the committee’s flag.
