Georgia will not comply with Russia’s demand to end the process of integration with NATO. This was stated by Zurab Abashidze, authorized by the Georgian government for relations with Russia, in an interview with Radio Poland.
“The Georgians have chosen their future themselves and see it in close cooperation with the European Union and NATO,” he said.
It is emphasized that Georgia feels part of Europe and wants to closely cooperate with the economic and defense structures of the old continent.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement containing an appeal to the NATO states to abandon the process of integrating Georgia and Ukraine into the alliance. In Tbilisi, this provoked a sharp reaction.
The decision to start the process of integration of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO was made in 2008 in Bucharest. Later, there was a conflict in South Ossetia – on the night of August 8, 2008. The then Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, announced the start of an operation in the republic, after which Russian troops were brought into the region. Then the leaders of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Georgia and Russia signed a plan for a peaceful settlement of the situation. The Russian Federation officially recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, and Georgia broke off diplomatic relations with Russia.
