Erdogan considers social media to be the main threat to democracy

Social media is a “threat to global security and democracy.” This opinion was expressed by Turkish President Rjep Tayyip Erdogan in a video message to the participants of the conference on information technology in Istanbul, Anadolu reports.

“Social media, which was initially called a symbol of freedom, has become one of the main sources of threat to today’s democracy. With the growing interest in social networks, the flows of lies and disinformation are increasing, ”Erdogan said, quoted by RBC.

In his opinion, social networks pose a threat to the whole world, and not just to individual states. The authorities “are trying to protect citizens, especially vulnerable sectors of society, from lies and misinformation, without violating the right to receive accurate and impartial information,” Erdogan added.

Note that from June 2020 to May 2021, hundreds of websites were blocked in Turkey. A number of opposition figures have been punished for their Twitter posts, in which they criticized the authorities. Many were taken into custody.
