It has always happened in the history of mankind: with the arrival of a new monarch, a new ruler, people want to live better days. Sometimes these hopes become reality, sometimes they lead to disappointment and sometimes frustration. In biblical times, hosannas, exclamations of joy at the coming of the Redeemer, later turned into the cry “Crucify him!”

Ecuador has suffered so many disappointments, its once peaceful streets are now stained with blood, without any strong, visionary, effective action being taken to improve this gruesome reality. This reality makes investment, job creation and prosperity almost impossible.

Fate, after this constitutional adventure of cross-death, placed at the head of Ecuador a young man whose future actions are difficult to predict, we can only speculate about them.

There is speculation about alliances in the Assembly between several rival political groups, but there are already disagreements between them, and even within them; This became evident in connection with the possible prosecution of the plaintiffs, which started a war of words that shows the fragility of the alleged agreements; The government pleaded in favor of the plaintiff. This division runs parallel to the fierce dispute over the Supervisory Office: when it seems that this process will finally conclude with the recognition of the highest grade of one of them, then, to prevent this, the famous appeal for protection from any judge; a constitutional invention that leads us to anarchy.

The newly elected president announced a public consultation for constitutional changes. If they are partial, they will probably not mean correcting the structural defects of the current Constitution: the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CCCCS) will continue to exist, and those protective resources that enable the paralysis of the entire administration will leave free those who should be imprisoned.

The constitutionalists will defend it at all costs and they will continue to be the main block of the National Assembly. The usual road to constitutional reform is uphill. We have recently seen the failure of the constitutional reforms proposed by outgoing President Guillermo Lasso: none have been approved. A similar failure of the new Government would cause great damage to its reputation and the country. The president-elect mentioned the creation of a jury system of justice, as it exists in the United States. This existed in the 19th century and failed, because it bred corruption; Today, in the age of drug trafficking and organized crime, this would be impossible to apply.

Because of what was said, several citizens supported Dr. Simón Espinosa’s proposal by plebiscite to abolish the current Constitution, i.e. in the same way it was adopted, and the previous one, the one from 1998, remains in force, updated. It could be consulted so that the elections of deputies are held in the second round. (OR)
