EU allocates 61 million euros for Afghans and refugees

Due to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, the European Union has allocated 61 million euros in humanitarian aid to those most in need in the country and to refugees in Pakistan, the European Commission (EC) said on Tuesday.

“A total of €60 million has been allocated for humanitarian organizations working in Afghanistan, and another €1 million for organizations in Pakistan. The new funding will help counter the food crisis in Afghanistan, where almost half the population faces acute food shortages,” the EC said in a news release published in Brussels.

The next EU aid package for Afghanistan, the communique noted, will also cover other needs such as housing, protection, health care, food, water and sanitation, especially for the population affected by a series of earthquakes that occurred in the west of the country in October.

Part of the funding, the European Commission explained, will go to support Afghan refugees returning to Afghanistan. At the same time, priority attention will be paid to supporting host communities, Interfax reports.

According to the EC, this new package comes on top of almost €94 million in EU humanitarian aid already allocated to Afghanistan this year, including €4.5 million approved following the recent earthquakes.

Brussels added that “EU humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan is carried out exclusively through humanitarian partners on the ground.”
