German Chancellor Olaf Scholz addressed the German nation. In an interview with the newspaper Mannheimer Morgen, he called on the country’s citizens to show civic courage to protect Jews.
“Anyone who attacks Jews in Germany attacks all of us,” Scholz said, adding that we need to work together “to protect the Jews in Germany, it’s about civic courage.” He also stressed that anti-Semitism must be fought mercilessly, and the responsibility of the state is to protect Jewish institutions.
Scholz’s calls came after the European Commission announced a surge in incidents motivated by anti-Semitism in the EU. They noted that anti-Semitic actions go against everything that Europe stands for, including the basic values and way of life of EU countries.
Earlier, German cities were engulfed in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. There have also been attacks on Jewish establishments in the country. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said that this all indicates a high level of anti-Semitism in Germany.
Let us recall that pro-Palestinian actions in a number of countries are taking place against the backdrop of an escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7 after rocket attacks by the radical Palestinian movement on Israeli territory and the seizure of a number of settlements bordering the Gaza Strip. It was reported that more than 1,400 Israelis were killed, most of them civilians. Hamas militants also took a large number of hostages. In response, the Israeli authorities set up a blockade of the Gaza Strip and continue bombing the enclave. According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 9,000 people have been killed in the strip since Israeli bombing began. According to WHO, 40% of the dead were children. Currently, the Gaza Strip is blocked – there is no electricity, no Internet, and the supply of heat and water has been interrupted.
