Russia’s permanent representative to the UN calls Israel an “occupying state”

In the current conflict with the Palestinian Hamas movement, Israel has no right to self-defense. This was stated by Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya during his speech at an emergency special session of the General Assembly of the world organization on Palestine.

“Israel, as an occupying power, does not have the right to self-defense, which was confirmed by the advisory opinion of the International Court in 2004,” Nebenzya explained, as quoted by Kommersant.

He added that Russia recognizes Israel’s right to ensure its own security. “We do not deny Israel the right to fight terrorism. But fight terrorists, not civilians,” added the Russian permanent representative.

Let us recall that the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict began on October 7 after Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli territory and the capture of a number of settlements bordering the Gaza Strip. More than 1.4 thousand Israelis were killed, most of them civilians. Hamas militants also took a large number of hostages. According to Gaza’s health ministry, about 9,000 people have been killed in the strip since Israeli bombing began. According to WHO, 40% of the dead were children. Currently, the Gaza Strip is blocked – there is no electricity, no Internet, and the supply of heat and water has been interrupted.
