Lithuanian customs will tighten control of sanctioned goods

Since November, Lithuanian customs has been strengthening control over the import of sanctioned goods through Lithuania to Russia and Belarus in order to avoid possible circumvention of sanctions, the agency reported.

This could lead to longer procedures at the border. Particular attention will be paid to the classification of exported goods, Interfax reports.

According to customs, there have been cases where exported goods have been classified into untagged items in an attempt to avoid sanctions. “In the hope of understanding, we inform business representatives that due to increased control over exported goods, the time frame for customs clearance of export procedures may increase,” the department emphasizes.

It also proposes to describe the declared goods in as much detail as possible, so that their characteristics that affect the classification of goods can be identified from the description and documents confirming this can be provided.

When exporting goods from Lithuania to Central Asia and the Caucasus, customs will check the classification of goods, including laboratory tests, by taking samples of goods.

Earlier in 2023, Lithuanian customs had already strengthened control measures over the export of sanctioned goods several times.
