Connectivity continues to increase in Peru. At the end of 2022, 90.4% of Peruvian households, that is, 9 out of 10, had access to the internet, whether fixed or mobile, according to data from the Residential Survey of Telecommunications Services (Erestel), commissioned by the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel). This figure represents a growth of 2.7 percentage points compared to 2021 (87.7%).
As a consequence of this expansion, a total of 9 million 221,837 Peruvian households were connected to the internet by 2022. By geographic area, the greatest increase in households with internet access occurred in rural areas, since it went from 68.7% to 76.6%. The rest of the urban area (91.4%) and Metropolitan Lima (96.5%) also registered positive results when compared to the previous year: 89.6% and 95.0% of internet connections in these geographic sectors, respectively.
Socioeconomic sector C presented greater growth
In segmentation by socioeconomic variables, in accordance with Erestel 2022, The most notable growth was observed in sector C, going from 94.5% to 97.7% between 2021 and 2022. In the D/E sector, access to fixed or mobile internet reached 84.6% in contrast to the previous period (81.5%). Meanwhile, in the AB sector, internet access remained above 99%.
In the analysis by age groups, a significant increase in internet access was determined in households whose head of family is 51 years or older: 85.1% was recorded in 2022 compared to the 80.1% reported in 2021. In the rest of the groupsInternet use continues to exceed 92% in households, whose owners are between 18 and 50 years old.
In terms of gender, there is greater progress in households with a woman as head of the family: an increase in internet access was perceived from 86.5% to 90.6%. On the other hand, in households headed by men, internet access in 2022 reached 90.4%; In this way, an increase was also shown compared to 2021 (88.2%).
89.5% of homes have mobile internet
The survey of Osiptel also revealed that progress in internet access has been observed in both mobile and fixed connections. By 2022, 89.5% of Peruvian households had mobile internet access; compared to 85.8% the previous year. In addition, Access to fixed connection increased from 39.4% to 41.7%.
In rural areas, a notable increase in mobile connections has been observed: it went from 68.3% to 76.0%. Regarding fixed internet connections, by 2022, 10.1% of rural households had this type of connection. ANDn Metropolitan Lima, 96.0% of households had mobile internet connections and 73.5% had fixed internet connections. In the rest of the urban area, both services reached 90.1% and 32.4%, respectively.
According to the results of Erestel, the increase in fixed internet access coincided with the increase in the presence of desktop computers in homes, which reached 42.1%, a figure higher than that recorded in 2021 (36.0% ). Likewise, greater use of laptops was observed in Peruvian families: it went from 49.4% to 51.3%, between 2021 and 2022, which means that more than half of homes have this device.
