Minsk wants to receive compensation from Moscow due to the delay in the commissioning of the BelNPP

Belarus raised the issue of compensation to the Russian side in connection with the postponement of the commissioning of the Belarusian NPP, the Russian Federation proposed options. This was announced by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, accepting a report on the completion of the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

“We have had a slight delay in the commissioning of the nuclear power plant due to the Russian side. Naturally, according to the agreement, we raised the issue of compensation with them. There is no need to hide this. There was nothing extraordinary there,” Lukashenko said, as quoted by the BelTA news agency. “But such questions were raised due to the fact that the deadlines for commissioning the station were violated, and the Russian side bears responsibility for this.”

According to him, the Russian Federation offered “options for the price of fresh nuclear fuel – both for Russians and for its stations – and a warranty period of five years [на основные узлы]”, reports TASS.

The President asked whether this satisfied the Belarusian side. “We, of course, should not unnecessarily strain the Russians: we had enough electricity and still have enough, but an agreement is an agreement, and are the concessions that the Russians and Rosatom made sufficient for the Belarusian side,” Lukashenko added.

Earlier it was reported that Minsk, in connection with the shift in the commissioning dates of the first and second power units, is negotiating with the Russian side to adjust the terms of the loan agreement – both in terms of loan repayment terms and in terms of the interest rate.
