In the history of mankind, it is usual to try to single out the responsibility for negative circumstances on a person, who may have some responsibility, but it is not that he is only “guilty”.
From the history of the country, I am citing what relates to the collapse of liberalism in power in the first decade of the 20th century. When the only way for anti-Alfarista liberalism to control Eloy Alfaro was to imprison him in the Panopticon of Quito, he was arrested in Guayaquil and taken to Quito. And the assault on the prison was organized, they killed Alfaro and his comrades, dragged their remains to Ejido and burned them on January 28, 1912.
The Protocol of Rio de Janeiro of January 29, 1942 for the de-occupation of a part of Ecuadorian territory by Peru – occupied in the invasion of 1941 – was not the sole responsibility of then President Carlos Alberto Arroyo del Ría, but the result of several mistakes. and false steps, for decades, in the border relationship between Ecuador and Peru. With the revolution of May 28, 1944, not only the police barracks in Guayaquil, the streets of Chile and Cuenca, but also the house of Arroyo del Río were conquered and burned; and, in the Casona of the University of Guayaquil, they removed and burned the portrait of Arroyo, for years the rector of that house of studies, a portrait that was reinstalled in 2000. That Arroyo made mistakes as president, of course, not only in terms of the conflict with Peru.
Just complaining and pointing out possible responsibilities is not enough.
I mention this because of the penalty that the reduction of electricity supply hours means for the Ecuadorian population, which is even more severe when it affects the reduction of other services, drinking water, food, to the detriment of numerous companies and other entrepreneurs on whom the income of being able to sell what they produce or offer depends , and those that are in demand, and other forms of production, marketing and services, besides affecting the quality of life and the risk of damage to household equipment.
Put simply, the blame lies with President Guillermo Lasso and his government for their lack of foresight due to the threat of an acute drought that was expected. In addition to this circumstance, the reality is that previous Governments who contracted investments in the electric power sector with a surcharge are also responsible, because business is included in the contracting, without taking decisions that should mean the quality of services for the short, medium and long term, in different sources.
Both Lasso, in the days remaining until the handover of power, and the newly elected president, Daniel Noboa, in the talks they may have, must prioritize the demands of governments and companies for sources of electricity generation with a vision of the present and avoiding that the risk is repeated in the times to come.
Just complaining and pointing out possible responsibilities is not enough.
Failures and mistakes will always appear in government showcases, more so than the successes that have occurred. Not to be forgotten. (OR)
