TikTok has removed 500 thousand videos related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

The Chinese social network TikTok has removed 500 thousand videos and stopped 8 thousand live broadcasts related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as part of efforts to combat disinformation, TASS reports, citing a statement from the platform.

In order to “prevent the use of TikTok features to incite hatred, additional restrictions on participation in the LIVE program have been introduced as a temporary measure, taking into account the increased security risk in the context of the current hostage situation,” the statement said.

As part of “ensuring the safety of the community and the integrity of the platform,” the social network announced the recruitment of additional moderators with knowledge of Arabic and Hebrew to review content related to events in the Middle East.

According to experts cited by the Financial Times, social networks are “literally overwhelmed” by a wave of disinformation on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. There has been a “hundred-fold explosion” in the number of viral claims about the conflict between Israel and Hamas that experts have found to be false after being verified for accuracy, according to business intelligence group CREOpoint, which tracks fake news.
