Copper production grew 7.5% in August: gold, iron, tin, zinc and lead also rose

The production of copper led the progress of most metals in our country in the month of August and advanced 7.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, reported the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem).

The Mining Statistical Bulletin (BEM) for the month in question indicates that the year-on-year increases were especially notable in the production of copper (+7.5%), gold (+8.3%), zinc (+6.8%), lead (+5%), iron (+17.5%) and tin (+40.5%).

However, Minem reported that national production of silver (-4.1%) and molybdenum (-24.4%) reported year-on-year decreases.

In the case of the red metal, in the ninth month of the year a production of 223,178 fine metric tons (FMT) was reported, higher than the 207,588 FMT of the previous year.

This, Minem explained as a result of the optimal performance of Cerro Verde, which achieved an increase of 10.8%, “maintaining its monthly production levels above 36,000 TMF so far this year.”

Southern Copper and Marcobre registered a year-on-year increase of 10.8% and 25.2%, respectively, in August. Quellaveco continues to contribute to the increase in copper production with 27,691 TMF.

In the accumulated, copper production reached a total of 1 million 771,183 TMF in the first months of 2023, an increase of 18.1% compared to what was registered in the same period of 2022 (1 million 499,477 TMF).

Finally, the global metals result for August, combined with what was recorded in previous months, contributed to the production of copper (+18.1%), zinc (+5.4%), lead (+3.8%) and iron (+15.8%) will show a positive variation in contrast to the accumulated from January to August 2022.

In addition, metallic mining production of 4 of the 8 main metals showed increases compared to the previous month, such as gold (+12.1%), zinc (+6.9%), silver (+7.8%). and lead (+2.5%).
