Yesterday, the people of Ecuador once again showed their love for democracy and their desire to improve things in the country through the validity of laws and institutions.
The elections that all Ecuadorians have just completed culminate in a traumatic and difficult process that has painted black clouds on the horizon, which, apart from the tragic death of Fernando Villavicenci, have not produced the storm of democratic destabilization that some feared.
The election procedure results from the decision of the President of the Republic, which was entirely within his constitutional powers. We can like the constitution or not, I personally don’t like it, but it is there and we have to respect it. In our legal system, the President can dissolve the National Assembly and Guillermo Lasso did that. This power is accompanied by a subsequent mandate: the calling of presidential and legislative elections to complete the period interrupted by the dissolution of the Assembly, both the presidential period and the assembly period.
The country, institutionally weak and extremely fragile in its legal security, witnessed the president’s use of constitutional powers and respect for the obligations of the electoral function, all of which was confirmed clearly and implicitly by the people going to the polls.
This is good news, because it reflects that in a moment of great turbulence, such as the conflict between the Assembly and the President, and using the last measure of dissolving the Assembly, the constitutional channels were filled step by step and the people confirmed it with the sovereign and solemn power of the vote.
The result, which is still as important as this first aspect I described, also leaves great lessons.
For the third time, the Correísta movement has failed. The first was the election of Lenín Moreno Garcés, not because what was considered a “betrayal” for that political trade, but because from the beginning, in a public proposal, Lenín Moreno as a candidate expressed programmatic points and courses of action that clearly distinguished him . … of his predecessor and the political practices of the civil revolution regime. Few people mention these statements of Moreno before the election, but it is important to understand why Lenín Moreno still managed to pass 50% in the second election round.
The second failure was with Guillermo Lasso, from whom he lost Correia, with a strategy in which Rafael Correa was “hidden”, because it was believed that it did more harm than good to his candidate. This is the third election, in which the candidate was Rafael Correa, visible to the extreme.
In addition to the fact that the campaign did not address the fundamental problems of the country, that the newly elected president will face huge problems that neither he nor his opponent talked about, this result reflects that the population does not want to vote for puppets. Luisa González’s very clear submission message to Rafael Correa was initially changed to “I will be president.” That is, I need Correa in the first round, I run away from Correa in the second round. The usual talkativeness of the former president and the lack of verbal control were the main enemy of Doña Luisa, whose personal merits and call to fight should be admired, but who could not definitively shake off the image of being a puppet of another person and a political party. or project. The Argentinian slogan “Cámpora to the presidency, Perón to power” was almost absent in the campaign. That simply does not suit today’s young electorate.
Daniel Noboa is winning because regardless of whether his bids were possible or not, whether he promised the right thing or not, people knew they were voting for him and not by other people behind his candidacy who would go after the result to see how they formed the government and directed their policies, and, above all, the taste that those people behind him wanted to improve personal situations.
This is the background of the election. Correismo made her visible, a person who was very little known. This same Koreanism buried her and prevented her from being the first woman who could hold the first magistracy in the country.
Now it’s time for the whole society to understand that after the institutional storm that could have started and calmed down with the salve of popular will, they will have to face very serious problems, and everyone will demand this from the trade union.
The main task of the new president, who has shown an excellent flair, intuition and ability to get where he has arrived, will be to unite the will of Ecuador to be able to face those problems that, if not done, will end up putting the country in situations of great risk in a crisis .economic, social and political with great consequences.
