A team of researchers from the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Jiangsu, China, has built and tested a prototype of a hypersonic TSV X-plane that can orbit planet Earth in a matter of hours, Hi-Tech reported, citing a report in the South China Morning Post.
It clarifies that unlike most hypersonic aircraft concepts with an engine on the lower part of the hull, the design of the TSV X-plane features two separate engines on each side – at lower rpm they operate like conventional turbojet engines.
The configuration with no moving parts allows the aircraft to quickly switch to high speed mode. As a result, the plane can accelerate to a speed of five times the speed of sound. This means that the TSV X-plane can fly around the planet in a few hours.
We add that the prototype has already been tested in a wind tunnel, and the experiment has shown the viability of the model.
