The Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs has prepared a bill to suspend the work of the Pededze and Vientuli checkpoints on the border with Russia. This restriction was a response to Moscow’s decision to allow Ukrainian citizens to enter from third countries only through two checkpoints. One of them is the Ludovka checkpoint in the Pskov region, which can be reached through Vientuli from the Latvian side, RBC reports.
“Such a decision assumes that conditions are being created on the Latvian-Russian border that can significantly affect public order and create a threat to national security. There is reason to believe that such a decision by Russia is a response to the corresponding decision of the European Union, including the decision of Latvia to ban vehicles with Russian license plates from entering the country,” the LSM TV channel quotes an excerpt from the text of the bill.
The Latvian Foreign Ministry notes that the Terekhova and Grebneva checkpoints on the Latvian-Russian border will remain operational.
The changes are proposed to be introduced on October 16, when restrictions on the entry into Russia of Ukrainians over 14 years of age from third countries come into force. They will be able to get here only through the Ludovka checkpoint and the checkpoint at Sheremetyevo airport. The government stated that this was a temporary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of Russians.
