The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation began an investigation after information appeared that the Wildberries marketplace began charging clients a commission when paying for orders using Visa and Mastercard cards issued in Russia.
“On the instructions of Igor Krasnov, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation is carrying out supervisory measures in connection with information about the introduction of commissions by the Wildberries marketplace for paying for goods using Visa and Mastercard cards, as well as charging buyers a fee for returning goods,” the supervisory agency said on Thursday.
The inspection is being carried out with the participation of Rospotrebnadzor and the Bank of Russia, the prosecutor’s office added. “Particular attention will be paid to the validity of the actions of the specified trading platform, respect for consumer rights, and prevention of the use of illegal schemes in order to extract excess commercial income,” the department said in a statement.
The department emphasized that “if violations of laws and facts of infringement of citizens’ rights are identified, comprehensive response measures will be taken.”
The company’s press service previously reported that Wildberries began charging customers a commission of 3% when paying for orders using Visa and Mastercard cards issued in Russia.
