Tomatoes have many beneficial properties, but eating them fresh and canned is harmful for gastrointestinal and kidney diseases, nutritionist Elena Solomatina told Channel Five. According to her, the presence of various acids in tomatoes carries the risk of developing diseases of the digestive system, salt metabolism disorders, in particular gout.
“Tomatoes are still quite acidic vegetables, so if you have problems with the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the acute stage, with various gastritis, ulcers, pancreatitis, liver diseases, it is, of course, better to avoid eating them,” the specialist explained.
In addition, as the nutritionist noted, the high content of oxalic acid in tomatoes is harmful for kidney disease, high levels of uric acid, gout and related joint problems. A large amount of salt and vinegar in canned tomatoes is contraindicated for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as problems with the heart and blood vessels, the expert continued.
Salt retains liquid. And people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, edema, of course, are also better off avoiding such tomatoes or eating them in very minimal quantities. In addition, you should not eat green tomatoes and dishes prepared from unripe fruits – they contain the toxic organic compound solanine.
