One of the Nobel Prize laureates in chemistry was Russian Alexey Ekimov. The award from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences also went to Mungi J. Bavendi, Louis Brus – all scientists work in the USA.

Ekimov has been working as a chief scientist at Nanocrystals Technology Inc., USA, since 1999, Mungi Bavendi works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Louis Brus at Columbia University.

They were awarded the prize “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” which are used in modern LED television screens, solar panels, and also in medicine.

According to Kommersant, Ekimov graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Leningrad State University (department of molecular physics), he worked as a visiting professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, at the Claude Bernard University of Lyon, at the Max Planck Institute and at Osaka University. In the early 1980s, Ekimov succeeded in creating size-dependent quantum effects in colored glass. His developments were continued by Louis Bruce and Mungi Bawendi.

Previously, the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2023 was awarded for the development of experimental methods for studying electron dynamics, and in Physiology and Medicine for the invention of mRNA vaccines.
