The UN mission assessed the situation in Karabakh

The UN mission and UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva visited the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan on October 1.

The information on the UN website reports that members of the mission visited the city of Khankendi, where they talked with the local population and other persons, and got acquainted with the state of health and education facilities.

“The mission noted that in Khankendi, civilian and public infrastructure, including a hospital, school, residential buildings, cultural and religious sites, were not damaged. In addition, the mission noted that the Azerbaijani government is preparing to restore health care and other household services in Khankendi,” the information says. At the same time, the mission did not notice any operating stores.

According to the mission, during the conversations it was emphasized that the number of Armenians in the Karabakh region at present, according to various estimates, could be up to 1 thousand people, Interfax reports.

“The mission emphasized that it has not received any complaints from the local population or other interlocutors about violence against civilians since the last ceasefire,” the statement said. In addition, the mission did not observe any evidence of destruction of agricultural infrastructure in the region or death of livestock on the road.

“Conversations conducted by the mission showed that at present it is difficult to say how ready the local population is to return. One thing is clear that there is a need for confidence-building measures, and this requires time and effort from all parties,” the information emphasizes.
