Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov: Relations between the Russian Federation and the United States can reach a new Cuban missile crisis if “the comrades on the other side do not understand”

Relations with the United States may well reach a situation similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. According to TASS, this was stated by the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov.

“If, as they say, the comrades on the other side do not understand, and everything will continue as it is, we may well, according to the logic of the development of events, suddenly wake up and see ourselves in something similar. It will be a failure of diplomacy in general, a failure of foreign policy. But there is still time to try to come to an agreement on a sound basis, ”he said.

On December 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden held talks via video link during which they agreed that they would instruct their representatives to begin “substantive consultations on sensitive issues.”

Earlier, Putin proposed starting substantive negotiations on achieving legal guarantees of NATO’s eastward expansion. According to the head of state, Russia intends to seek reliable and long-term security guarantees and in negotiations with the United States and its allies will “insist on the development of specific agreements that will exclude any NATO moves to the east.” He added that tensions on the western borders of Russia are growing, “it is enough to see how close the military infrastructure of the North Atlantic Alliance has moved to the Russian borders.”
