The useful life of school espressos manufactured since 2001 is extended by five years

The measure is part of the reforms to the Traffic Law. The owners of 14,800 of these vehicles would benefit.

The owners of 14,800 school buses nationwide will be able to benefit from the five-year extension of the useful life of these vehicles, after the approval of a legal criterion framed in the reforms to the Organic Law of Land Transportation, Traffic and Road Safety.

This measure seeks to alleviate the economic losses generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which left 80% of the vehicle fleet of this modality without work, since March 2020.

School transporters expect face-to-face classes to increase to reactivate their service

Through a memorandum of December 8, the executive director of the National Transit Agency (ANT), Adrián Castro, informed the municipalities that school transport vehicles from the year of manufacture 2001 onwards “have the right to be beneficiaries of the extension of the useful life ”.

This is indicated by the reform of the Traffic Law, a situation that will allow them to register their units without having to renew them immediately.

Manuel Ayala, school transporter and owner of a bus from 2001, commented that when trying to register his vehicle to be able to provide service with the return to classes they told him that it had completed its useful life (20 years) and that in order to continue working he had to buy a new unit.

From $ 33 to $ 82 it can cost the payment of school express in Guayaquil

“We have not worked for almost two years, if I sell my unit they will not give me more than $ 6,000 and a new car is over $ 20,000. Debts are cornering us and we do not have the resources to renew the fleet, if the useful life was not prolonged, I would have been unemployed, “said the man, who estimates that in Azuay, where he provides services, at least 980 of his colleagues are will welcome this benefit.

The executive director of the ANT indicated that this decision is “above all in solidarity with those who have been affected by the pandemic” and announced that in the next few days resolutions will be issued that will benefit the other transport branches, which were also affected by the health crisis caused by the coronavirus.
