European officials acknowledge that military support for Ukraine is dwindling as its own supplies dwindle, and are now pushing for expansion of Kyiv’s own arms industry as essential to Ukraine’s economic development. The New York Times writes about this.
According to media reports, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the Defense Ministers of Great Britain and France Grant Shapps and Sebastian Lecornu recently came to Kyiv to discuss this topic.
They consulted about increasing the production of Western weapons directly on the territory of Ukraine. The meeting took place the day before the start of the forum of international military contractors in Ukraine, to participate in which, as reported in Kiev, representatives of 165 companies from 26 countries were supposed to arrive.
It was noted that, in particular, representatives of twenty defense industry enterprises arrived together with the French minister. They discussed military support, including strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.
As Stoltenberg noted after the negotiations, expanding weapons production is important for Ukrainian companies, since “this will be an important opportunity to establish new partnerships with the industry within the alliance and beyond.”
