In what years does the action of the new “Quack” take place? Viewers have doubts because of the dialect and… roads

For several days now, “Quack” directed by Michał Gazda has been breaking popularity records on Netflix. Many admire the outstanding acting and the engaging plot, although the time in which Professor Wilczur’s story is set is controversial. In what years do the events in the new film adaptation take place?

Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz is one of the most outstanding Polish novels of the interwar period, which has so far been adapted into three films. The first one was created by Michał Waszyński in 1937, while the second, most popular one, was presented to viewers by Jerzy Hoffman in 1982. Four decades after its premiere, it decided to challenge the original by creating its next installment, which debuted in the platform’s library on September 27, 2023.

“Quack” from 1937 and 1982. In what time do the events take place?

The story of Professor Rafał Wilczur was created in the form of a script. However, the filmmakers were not interested in Dołęga-Mostowicz’s script, so he eventually adapted it into a novel, which was published in 1937. The plot was set in the 1930s, and although initially the events take place in small-town circumstances, later the majority of them take place in the countryside. When the book won the hearts of readers and became a bestseller, it was decided to adapt it for the screens.

The first two film adaptations, from 1937 and 1982, were shown in similar realities. They are consistent with the novel and faithfully reflect the times described on its pages. The latest version of this story created by Netflix differs a lot in this respect, because it to some extent deviates from this idea and is one of the key topics of discussion among viewers and critics. Why?

Is the timing of the action in the new “Quack” a controversial issue? Some elements are debatable

The image of the village in previous adaptations is consistent with the period in which the events take place. Perhaps because they were created in different times, so it was much easier for the creators to create circumstances appropriate to the events. However, there are some inconsistencies in the latest film adaptation, which, although they do not have a significant impact on the plot and are rather a secondary issue, do attract the viewers’ attention.

We are talking, for example, about asphalt roads, on which in some scenes horses drawn by carts or cars typical of that era travel. However, this is not the only element that causes the shot clock to be questioned. Although the characters’ dialogues take the viewer back to the period of ancient, multicultural Poland, their speech differs significantly from the traditional dialect of that time.
