Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with members of the Human Rights Council (HRC), said that he did not consider it necessary to keep the rector, Professor Sergei Zuev “Shaninka” – of the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences in the pre-trial detention center.
“I see no need to keep him behind bars,” said Leonid Nikitinsky, a member of the HRC and Novaya Gazeta observer, in response to a speech by HRC member Nikolai Svanidze.
Zuev is accused of embezzlement by means of fraud of 21 million rubles. The defendants in the case of embezzlement of money belonging to the Fund for New Forms of Education Development, in addition to Zuev, are ex-Deputy Head of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation Marina Rakova, former employees of the fund Yevgeny Zak, Maxim Inkin, Artur Stetsenko, as well as the executive director of Shaninka Kristina Kryuchkova.
Recently, Zuev, right at the trial, needed the help of doctors. Because of the high blood pressure, an ambulance was called for him. The professor suffers from hypertension and atherosclerosis, and shortly before his arrest, he underwent heart surgery.
