Dentists have finally revealed whether chewing gum is dangerous

Debates about the benefits and harms of chewing gum have been going on for a long time. Dentist Veronika Melekhova explained when chewing gum is good for health, Gazeta.Ru reports.

According to the expert, people who use chewing gum after meals are doing absolutely right. It stimulates the production of saliva, which contains useful minerals, and also cleanses the oral cavity of food debris and teeth from plaque, thus minimizing the possibility of bacterial development. However, the beneficial effect lasts for 15 minutes. There is no need to chew gum any longer.

Regarding concerns about the negative impact of chewing gum on fillings, the specialist explained that there are no threats to a correctly installed filling and a tooth in which secondary caries processes have not begun. It’s another matter if the filling is installed incorrectly or if secondary caries develops around it – then, indeed, the filling can pop out. However, even without this, the person should have visited the dentist.

At the same time, Melekhova recalled the danger of chewing gum on an empty stomach for people suffering from gastritis and ulcers: due to its ability to stimulate the production of gastric juice, irritating the mucous membrane, the situation may worsen. On the contrary, if you chew gum after eating, this feature will promote good digestion.
