Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan convened the country’s Security Council after the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry announced the start of “local anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The politician confirmed the information of the Ministry of Defense that there are no Armenian armed forces in the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. He also noted that he expects action from Russian peacekeepers to stabilize the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian prime minister assured that the country is not going to start hostilities with Baku.
Meanwhile, crowds of people have gathered in the center of Yerevan to protest against the backdrop of the situation in Karabakh. The protesters blocked Tigran Mets Avenue in Yerevan and chanted slogans against Pashinyan “Nikol the traitor” and “Artsakh” (the Armenian name of Karabakh – editor’s note), Sputnik “Armenia” reports.
Those gathered accuse the leadership of Armenia and Pashinyan personally of the fact that their policies led to the current situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. “More than one hundred thousand Armenian citizens are in Nagorno-Karabakh. You must protect them, don’t look from the sidelines,” said one of the protesters, TASS reports.
Pashinyan, commenting on the rallies in Yerevan, said that the authorities will react in accordance with the law.
In turn, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Nagorno-Karabakh, Gegham Stepanyan, said that as a result of Azerbaijan’s actions in the republic, two people were killed, one of whom was a child, and 11 people were injured.
