Pashinyan: Azerbaijan is pulling troops to the Armenian border and the line of contact

Over the past few days, Azerbaijan has been “accumulating” troops along the line of contact with Nagorno-Karabakh and the border with Armenia. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan at a government meeting.

“The military-political situation in our region has deteriorated significantly. <…> Anti-Armenian rhetoric intensified. The policy of claims against the sovereign territory of Armenia continues,” Pashinyan added, Interfax reports.

“Azerbaijan demonstrates its intention to commit a new military provocation against Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia,” Pashinyan added and called on the international community and UN countries to take serious “measures to prevent a new explosion in the region.”

He added that the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh had reached its peak.

Pashinyan also reaffirmed Yerevan’s commitment to the agreements reached on December 14, 2021 in Brussels, October 6, 2022 in Prague, and in May 2023 in Brussels, as well as the trilateral statement of the Russian Federation, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The day before, Pashinyan made reproaches against Russia. In an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, he said that Armenia’s security dependence on Russia is a mistake. According to him, “today, when Russia needs weapons and ammunition, it is clear that even if it wanted to, the Russian Federation would not be able to provide Armenia’s security needs.” At the same time, Russia, according to the Prime Minister of Armenia, is moving away from him due to its actions or inaction in the South Caucasus. He also reproached Moscow for the fact that the Russian peacekeeping forces are not fulfilling their mission according to the tripartite statement of November 9, 2020, they do not control the Lachin corridor to Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, Russia either cannot or does not want to maintain control over this corridor.
