“Green Border”. Agnieszka Holland reacts to Zbigniew Ziobro’s offensive post. “vile”

Agnieszka Holland announces a lawsuit against Zbigniew Ziobro. “I cannot remain indifferent to such an open and brutal attack by a person holding the very important constitutional function of the Minister of Justice and, at the same time, the Prosecutor General in Poland. As a citizen and as a representative of the world of culture,” she writes. The film “Green Border” by Agnieszka Holland, after its world premiere, which took place on September 5, became one of the important candidates for the Golden Lion in Venice.

Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram posted a post on Facebook: As representatives of Agnieszka Holland, we are providing you with our client’s statement regarding the infringement of her personal rights by Zbigniew Ziobro. “I declare that I have decided to react to Zbigniew Ziobro’s post published on September 4, 2023 on Portal X (formerly Twitter), in which he compared me with the propagandists of the Third Reich, who showed Poles as bandits and murderers,” we read in the first sentence of the statement.

“Green Border”. Agnieszka Holland defends the film and writes about Ziobro’s post: so vile that it leaves no room for any polemics

“Zbigniew Ziobro’s post clearly violates my personal rights and constitutes defamation,” notes Agnieszka Holland and adds: “I cannot remain indifferent to such an open and brutal attack by a person holding a very important constitutional function of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General in Poland. As a citizen and as a representative of the world of culture.

In our country, experienced by the death, cruelty and suffering of millions during World War II, comparison to the perpetrators of these events is extremely painful and requires an appropriate response. Putting me in line with the propagandists of the Third Reich is so despicable that it leaves no room for any polemics.

– writes Holland, emphasizing in the next sentence that she herself is the daughter of a liaison officer of the Warsaw Uprising and the granddaughter of Holocaust victims. He points out that Ziobro talks about a film he has not seen and continues: “Our film is an attempt to give voice to those who have no voice. The problem of migration will grow, causing it to soon affect each of us. Meanwhile, in Poland it is presented unilaterally, only from the perspective of government propaganda, which is interested in only one thing – to scare our society. Because people who are afraid – as the minister knows perfectly well – are much easier to rule. The director ends her statement with the announcement of taking legal action if Ziobro does not apologize within seven days and does not decide to pay 50,000 zlotys to the “Children of the Holocaust” Association.

Borys Szyc and Maja Ostaszewska are a wall behind Holland

Words of support have already been addressed to Agnieszka Holland by, among others, actor Borys Szyc, who also wrote a statement on his profile, we are with you. Earlier, actress Maja Ostaszewska, who played one of the main roles in “Green Border”, also expressed solidarity with Holland and outrage at the statements of some politicians. Agnieszka Holland and express my deep opposition to the disgraceful words addressed to her. Some could have been downplayed, but now the line has been crossed. I am counting on a strong common stance of opposition from the film community,” she wrote.

Before the official screening of Agnieszka Holland’s “Green Border” in Venice, a press conference was held, during which a minute’s silence was held in honor of refugees who have died trying to reach Europe since 2014. After the show, the applause did not stop for a quarter of an hour. The production, together with 22 other titles, was qualified for the Main Competition and has a chance for the Golden Lion.

Three perspectives intertwine in the film – refugees, Polish activists and border guards. “Green Border” is, as the creators say, a story about people – about people put in borderline situations. The script is fiction, deeply rooted in reality, and preparations for its implementation were preceded by hundreds of hours of document analysis, interviews with refugees, border guards, borderland residents, activists and experts. The screenplay was written jointly by Holland and director Gabriela Łazarkiewicz-Sieczko and writer Maciej Pisuk (writer of “You Are God”). Tomasz Naumiuk is responsible for the cinematography.

The film will hit Polish cinemas on September 22. The cast includes Maja Ostaszewska and Tomasz Włosok, as well as foreign actors – Jalal Altawil, Behi Djanati Atai, Mohamad Al Rashi, Dalia Naous, Taim Ajjan and Talia Ajjan.
