Before the summit, the G20 countries developed common language regarding the special military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. Bloomberg writes about this, citing a high-ranking French official.
Media reports that the agreement was reached thanks to the softening of the position of China, which previously maintained a policy of neutrality. Now, Chinese diplomats have taken a “softer stance” on Ukraine, the newspaper writes, but does not provide other details.
It is noted that on the issue of the communiqué, a compromise with Russia has yet to be reached.
The publication adds that India, which is hosting the summit this year, still refuses to condemn the actions of Russian forces in Ukraine.
The G20 Summit will be held on September 9-10, 2023 in New Delhi. The event will not be attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The countries will be represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Last year, at the end of the G20 summit in Indonesia, the majority of the group’s members “strongly condemned” the conduct of the special operation, although the final communique noted the presence of “other opinions” on this issue, ”Russia insisted on this clarification. However, at the meetings of the G20 representatives in February, July and August, the final statements were not agreed upon due to differences in positions on the conflict in Ukraine.
