Georgia begins impeachment proceedings against President Zurabishvili over her trip to Europe

The Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party announced the start of the impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zurabishvili. This was stated by the chairman of the party Irakli Kobakhidze.

According to him, the ruling party in Georgia believes that Zurabishvili grossly violated the constitution, according to which the president can exercise representative functions in foreign policy only with the consent of the government. Meanwhile, the head of state traveled to Europe despite the government’s refusal.

Kobakhidze noted that the impeachment of the president “will expose the common agenda of the radical opposition and Salome Zurabishvili, directed against the state interests of Georgia, including obtaining candidate status” for EU membership. In the near future, it is planned to collect signatures of members of the parliamentary majority, after which the submission on the impeachment procedure will be sent to the Constitutional Court, TASS reports.

It is known that Zurabishvili flew to Europe to negotiate with European leaders in support of Georgia getting the status of an EU candidate at the end of the year. So, today she is scheduled to meet in Brussels with the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.

Earlier it was reported that the President of Georgia called for greater control over Russian investors.
