European officials are concerned that U.S. President Joe Biden, in the absence of Ukraine’s success in the counteroffensive, could end up pushing Kiev into negotiations with Moscow as the U.S. election campaign heats up next year, Bloomberg writes.
According to the agency’s sources, US support for Ukraine is necessary, since Europe itself does not have the potential for sufficient military assistance to Kyiv. The Biden administration has repeatedly said before that it will support Ukraine “for as long as it takes.”
The interlocutors of the agency said that it would be a difficult task to repeat the level of support for Ukraine that was this year, as part of the counteroffensive. Ammunition stocks are depleted, and production in the US and Europe will be able to increase only by the end of 2024, the agency writes. F-16 fighters are also likely to be handed over to Kyiv no earlier than next year, the note notes.
As the U.S. counteroffensive continues, it has become increasingly difficult politically to support aid to Ukraine: the fight for a bill to finance Kiev in Congress this fall “will be the toughest”, and Republican candidate debates in the presidential campaign showed “growing hostility” towards sending weapons to Ukraine, the agency writes.
