The Danish government has introduced a bill to ban “improper handling of objects of significant religious significance,” according to the Danish newspaper Altinget.

The document was presented by Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard at a press conference in the presence of Foreign Minister Lars Lekke Rasmussen and chairman of the liberal party Venstre Jakob Ellemann-Jensen.

“When people stand up and burn the Koran, this is a fundamentally mocking and unsympathetic act. This harms Denmark and Danish interests, and risks harming the security of Danes around the world and at home. So the government wanted limited and precise legal intervention,” Hammelgaard said.

“Mishandling” refers to burning, spilling liquids, or stepping on or kicking an object, or destroying an object by tearing, cutting, or stabbing it with a knife. And we are talking not only about the Koran, but also about the Bible or the Torah, the minister specified.

The punishment is a fine or imprisonment for up to two years.
