Older adult died in a fire that started in Portoviejo

Despite efforts by firefighters, the older adult could not be rescued in time.

A fire that started in a building led to the death of an older adult who was resting on the second floor of the property, in Portoviejo.

The event took place around 03:30 on Monday the 6th in a two-story house with a terrace, between Juan Montalvo and 10 de Agosto streets, near Cayambe Park, in the north of the Manabi capital.

Williams Mera, second chief of the Portoviejo Fire Department, indicated that after the alert received, personnel from the San Pablo parish station traveled to the scene of the emergency.

Initially they learned that on the first floor of the burned house a woman had emerged unharmed from the fire and after that they proceeded to cool down that affected area. After ascending to the second floor, personnel were alerted that there was a person who would not have come out of the flames of the fire in time.

“The only option to be able to enter upwards was to first fumigate the bottom part, they proceed to do this maneuver, and they begin to climb the ladder and begin to extinguish the fire, then they entered a room and they realize that there is a In the lady in whom she was already without vital signs, the entire room was cooled down because she had a very high temperature, ”Mera pointed out.

The deceased person was recognized as Ruth S., 65, who would have inhaled toxic gases generated during the fire. There, temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius would have been generated, when a person’s lungs can only withstand temperatures of up to 70 degrees, Mera explained.

After confirming the death of Ruth S., the Firefighters staff awaited the arrival of Criminalistics agents from the National Police so that the gathering of evidence was carried out at the scene.

Mera said that the room where Ruth S. was could not be reached before, due to the high temperatures and because the accesses to the windows were secured with bars. Despite this, the windows were broken so that smoke escaped and the area could be ventilated.

Already around 05:30 this Monday the fire was controlled and totally liquidated. The hypothesis of what would have caused the fire would be a short circuit in the system that supplies the house. (I)
