General Viktor Afzalov, Chief of the General Staff of the Aerospace Forces, has been appointed as acting Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces instead of Sergei Surovikin. About this writes “RIA Novosti” with reference to an informed source.
RBC writes that Army General Surovikin was relieved of his post due to a transfer to another job. Now he is on a short vacation, the newspaper notes.
Previously, Afzalov already served as Acting Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces, when Surovikin commanded the Joint Group of Troops and Forces in the zone of the special military operation.
It should be noted that Sergei Surovikin was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces in October 2017. In October 2022, he was appointed commander of a group of forces in the NVO zone, in January of this year he became deputy commander. Until 2017, he commanded a Russian group in Syria.
From the night of June 23, 2023, Surovikin did not appear in public. A few days later, The New York Times, citing American officials, wrote that the general allegedly knew in advance about the plans of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Wagner PMC, to organize an armed rebellion.
