In an atmosphere of anxiety and fear, with the murdered candidate still mourning Ecuador, with other candidates who were or were close to the shooting and with the fear that the attack could blacken the elections, the Ecuadorian people once again showed their democratic calling, in which faith in the value of the voice and hope for better days for the homeland defeated every other sentiment.
These were unprecedented elections. They were announced after the first time the President of the Republic, in exercising the powers granted by the Constitution, dissolved the National Assembly, and also after the mandate of the Constitution, the HNS announced general elections for the President of the Republic. and legislators.
It was also an election in which the level of prior knowledge of the candidates was very low; in fact, the lowest in history. Add to that the extremely short campaign and, of course, the disturbing fact of Fernando Villavicenci’s death, which was mourned and mourned by the whole of Ecuador.
Finally, it was an election in which the issue of elections was mixed with the issue of the ill-fated popular consultation on Yasuní, which due to its result will seriously affect the economy of Ecuador.
Due to this set of factors, the electoral preferences were so unstable that, as never before in history, the level of indecision until the last day was extremely high, probably the highest in the electoral history of Ecuador.
But with all these elements, the Ecuadorian people made a statement, and as should happen in any democracy, that statement must be accepted.
The two finalists represent extremes in terms of proposals. First, Luisa González, a repeated call to look to the past: her os campaign was “We’ve already done it.” The second proposal, by Daniela Noboa, is for modernity, to attract young people, to show academic preparedness and knowledge.
Doña Luisa’s strategy, certainly not hers, minimized her, did not show her worth as a candidate, as her strategists made her a dome announcer who simply pressed a button from the outside so she could repeat what was said to him. Many people then could not judge whether she was really a valuable person or not. At the same time, Correísmo forgot that, despite the solid floor, he also had a solid roof, and devoted himself to strengthening the floor, rather than looking for a way to raise the roof.
Candidate Nobo recognized the reality of the modern political world and current election processes, where people don’t vote for parties, they don’t vote for ideologies, and that they have a completely new set of values and ways of being according to which the time to vote. He was, therefore, a politician of his time, he showed is a great ability in team formation, campaign discipline and achieving the final goal, which was the second round.
We are, therefore, in the second round between a candidate who depends on the management that is abroad and a candidate with his own motor and political ability who surprised the entire country.
We will have to decide between the two options, but what must be clear is that whoever becomes President of the Republic has the obligation to call Ecuadorians to seek unity of purpose, to achieve a national program that allows attacking the enormous structural problems that require actions that go far beyond the current government and that they include all sectors: security, subsidies, IESS, Issfa and Isspol pension system, interest and all others that require an urgent solution. .
Democracy won, those who sow terror lost, and that certainly gives us hope. (OR)
