In Paris, a base jumper jumped from the Eiffel Tower, after which he was arrested. This is reported by the French edition Actu17, citing sources in law enforcement agencies. The information is also confirmed by AFP, citing sources in the police and in the company that manages the tower.
It is reported that the jump was made by a 24-year-old young man. Early on the morning of August 17, he climbed the monument with a backpack and jumped from the third (last) floor of the Eiffel Tower from a height of almost 280 meters. After the jump, he opened his parachute and landed at the stadium, located on the Avenue de Suffren, where he was detained by the police.
It is specified that the security service of the tower called the law enforcement officers two hours before the incident, when the base jumper climbed the monument. The intervention team, which specializes in removing base jumpers, met the man on the third floor, but he refused to give up and ended up jumping. “He tried to escape by hiding his equipment, but was quickly detained,” a source close to the investigation told Actu17.
The management company of the Eiffel Tower, SETE, condemned his actions in a statement, calling them “irresponsible, endangering people’s lives,” Actu17 reports. Due to the base jumper incident, the tower opened to tourists late. The company also went to the police with a complaint that the young man endangered the lives of others.
