Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) submitted his resignation to President Edgars Rinkevics on Thursday. Thus, the government officially resigned, Interfax reports.
The government coalition included New Unity, the Joint List (OS) and the National Association. At the stage of forming the coalition, Karins proposed to include the opposition Progressive Party in it, but the other partners were against it. Karins has repeatedly pointed out that the OS and the National Association impede decision-making in the government, while these parties emphasized that the coalition is the best possible.
After more than two months of negotiations, Karins came up with the latest proposal – to rotate some ministers and agree on government priorities, saying that in case of refusal, a new government would be formed.
The OS and the National Association rejected this proposal and Karins resigned, indicating that he would no longer apply for the post of prime minister, and urging the New Unity to nominate a new candidate, which was the Minister of Welfare Evika Silina.
