After making changes to the model rules for using transport, the regions will be able to independently decide on the duplication of information in the subway in English, RBC reports with reference to the message of the Ministry of Transport.
Now carriers of off-street transport (metro, monorail, cable cars and funicular) are required to duplicate all information on diagrams, signs, inscriptions and when declaring stations in English. The Ministry of Transport has prepared changes that will make this optional. The department explained the initiative with “numerous appeals” from Russians and regions, “significant information load on passengers” and the socio-political situation in the country.
“The draft order of the Ministry of Transport does not cancel and does not prohibit the regions from duplicating information in transport in English. On the contrary, unnecessary requirements for duplication of information are removed from the subjects where this is not necessary, ”the ministry explained.
They also added that the requirement to inform in English was included in the model rules for using off-street transport in preparation for the 2018 World Cup in order to “help foreign guests of the championship navigate the subways of Russian cities where the matches were held.”
“After the approval of the order of the Ministry of Transport, the decision to duplicate information in English will be transferred to the level of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation and may be provided for by regional rules for the use of off-street transport,” the ministry concluded.
