Former SBU general gets 12 years in prison in Ukraine for spying for Russia

The ex-general of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) was sentenced to 12 years in prison for treason and an attempted terrorist act, the office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reports. According to Ukrainian media, we are talking about Valery Shaitanov, RBC reports.

“On a public charge by the office of the Prosecutor General, the court found guilty the former first deputy head of the Special Operations Center “A” of the SBU of high treason, a completed attempted terrorist act, as well as illegal handling of firearms or ammunition,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.

Shaitanov was accused of collecting and passing secret information to the Russian side, including on the actions of the SBU in the Donbass, and was also looking for perpetrators of terrorist attacks among former employees of the service. In addition to a prison term, he was sentenced to confiscation of property.

The prosecutor general’s office clarified that Shaitanov was preparing the assassination of the commander of the volunteer Chechen battalion. Dzhokhar Dudayev, who participated in the hostilities on the Ukrainian side, but it was prevented.
